Histoire du théâtre

Georges Hembauf (1866-1898), Toone III, reçut sa formation de marionnettiste de François Taelemans. Il fut surnommé « Toone de Locrel » car il avait établi sa cave de marionnettes à l’Impasse de Locrel ou Lokerengang, attenante à la rue de la Rasière. Dans le journal La Réforme, il déclare en 1897 que son théâtre est le seul parmi la quinzaine fonctionnant dans l’agglomération bruxelloise à ne pas perdre sa clientèle et à voir sa réputation grandir. Il occupait dix ouvriers et un chef-machiniste et disposait de quatre cents poupées. Son répertoire ne comptait pas moins de 1000 pièces, parmi lesquelles La Belle Gabrielle, La Guerre de Charlemagne, Le Bossu, Hamlet et La Bataille de Waterloo.
